RRSPs - You can win twice but you must be careful not to lose twice

Many Canadians are familiar with the idea of investing inside an RRSP. When you make money inside of an RRSP you actually win “twice” because the money that you make is not taxed until you withdraw the money. However what if you lose money inside of an RRSP? Unlike investing outside of an RRSP, your investment losses cannot be used to offset future gains. In this case you actually lose “twice”. Your RRSP should not be an account where you use to speculate on risky stocks. Time needs to be spent on creating an investment portfolio of mostly lower volatility investments so that you can save up for retirement without “losing twice”.
